Contacting Al Young Studios

By Al R. Young
One of the reasons email is the preferred point of contact is that a message received via our commercial site is automatically logged by our helpdesk, which, of course, facilitates tracking of customer inquiries.  We also prefer email because the channel is open 24 hours a day seven days a week and, frankly, is more conveniently monitored than telephone messages.  Neither emails nor telephone messages are jobbed-out to a 3rd party, but are received directly by the Studios.

Messages sent via social media flow into the stream of digital communications received at the Studios; nevertheless, while these communications may be monitored, they are not subject to the same rigor as communications received via our commercial site or voice messages left on the Studios' telephone system... The framework is 40 3/8 in. wide and 94 7/8 in. tall.  It is made almost entirely of alder, milled in the Studios' shop.  The arms by which C-clamps secure the framework to the original A-frame easel, are 30 in. long.  The ends of the arms at the C-clamps are free of the original easel, which provides maximum flexibility in positioning the framework... Project Commentaries: Lithography, drawing and experimentation (overview)

By Al R. Young
When I began experimenting with lithography in 1996, I focused on tonal rendering instead of line drawing because tonal pencil drawings had occupied much of my attention as an artist up until that time.
The work of artists whose interests draw them toward line as a means of expression has always delighted me, but my own interests invariably drew me toward tone instead.  I came to realize that were I to pursue line, I would have to study idiom and technique before I could express the subject; indeed, before I could even discover my own artistic identity in terms of line and then complete the long and arduous journey toward mastery... The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

By Al R. Young Reviewed by Elspeth Young

The Enchanted April is as magical as its name implies.  Not merely a description of an idyllic Easter vacation in a medieval castle (San Salvatore), the work's pace, its poetic language, and its cleverness create a rest cure for the reader as well as its heroines.  Von Arnim transplants four women, sporting archetypal women's woes, from their dreary London existence, between the wars, to a little stay in Heaven.

The reader meets self-righteous Rose Arbuthnot, who has sought wearisome toil as a means of compensating for lack of conjugal felicity; socially awkward Lottie Wilkins, whose love of beauty has been all but smothered by her gloomy Hampstead life; wealthy and widowed Mrs... Read more »

Framley Parsonage by Anthony Trollope

By Al R. Young Reviewed by Elspeth Young

If you love Jane Austen, read Framley Parsonage.  Its principal heroine, Lucy Robarts, is as witty, winning, and utterly lovable as Elizabeth Bennett, and on a scale of one to Mr. Darcy, the male romantic lead, Lord Lufton, rates at least a solid nine.

Set in Trollope's West Barsetshire, this fourth book in the Barsetshire Chronicles is my personal favorite.  Readers watch the rise and fall (and rise again) of Framley's young parson, Mark Robarts, and rejoice in the constancy of his beloved wife and best champion, Fanny... Read more »

The Papers of Seymore Wainscott — Leornian Feldham novellas now available

By Al R. Young Seymore Wainscott's story is very much about the horizons a person brings to his or her own life; very much about where a person lives in mind and heart regardless of where one's life actually occurs at any particular time.  Seymore had his share of hardship, like anyone else, but he was always searching the horizon for whatever he could add to his life, always trying to live in a wider world than the sometimes narrow circumstances in which he found himself.  And, like everyone else, Seymore benefitted greatly from those who took an active and beneficent interest in him... Tips & Techniques: Color formula shorthand

By Al R. Young When I embarked on oil painting, I spent a lot of time mixing the colors of the rudimentary palette with which a mentor suggested I begin.  And because of ideas that correlate color with wheels, I arranged the colors and my experiments accordingly, as I methodically mixed colors in the abstract and also created tonal scales.

If I used a lot of a particular hue in a particular mixture my record of the formula consisted of a big dot for the part the hue played in the mixture.  Addition of a little bit of a hue was represented by a little dot... Read more »

By Al R. Young Till We Meeting Again, an original oil painting by Elspeth Young, received an Award of Merit at the 90th Annual Spring Salon hosted by the Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah.
The juried exhibit (April 24 – July 6, 2014) is open only to Utah artists.
Of 860 entries submitted, 216 were juried-in to the show, and 20 of the works selected also received awards.

"We've noticed," said Rita Wright, director of the Museum, "that, almost without exception, everybody that walks into the gallery, enjoys Legacy (Portrait of Lois Childs) by Casey Childs (the first axial view in the exhibit), and then turns right around, and immediately migrates to the corner to view Till We Meet Again... From an enchanted April on to May

By Nancy Young Photographs by Elspeth Young
Yet again, our May Day flower phantom caught us napping and surprised us with a delightful little bouquet--this year a bouquet of Gerber daisies. Thank you whoever you are!
The first of May bouquet (along with a long line of ads) reminds me that Mother's Day is closer at hand than I'd like to believe--especially since The Enchanted April issue has only been in circulation for a couple of weeks. Currently we're traveling with Kate Douglas Wiggin as our guide through Penelope's multiple tours, tales, and experiences... Read more »

Tools, Supplies & Operations: Bedpost easel

By Al R. Young Just like the willful professors in competing courses during any given semester, painting projects don't always stay in line or behave well if they do.  And sometimes an artist's ability to respond to conflicting demands depends not so much on stamina, speed, or skill as on whether studio space or the way the studio is organized can respond.

The bedpost easel--so named because the horizontal bar at its center was originally a bedpost)--grew out of the need to use the $10 easel to work simultaneously on two paintings... Read more »

Tools, Supplies & Operations: Clamp-on mahl stick

By Al R. Young Although I enjoy the flexibility of positioning allowed by my aspen mahl stick, I sometimes spend several hours engaged in very close work on a relatively small area of a painting.  For such sessions, I enjoy the freedom of a clamp-on hand rest such as the accessory shown, here, designed specifically for the $10 easel.... Project Commentaries: Blessed Are The Meek by Elspeth Young

By Al R. Young
By Elspeth Young
Artwork by Elspeth Young; Photographs by Tanner M. Young This woman has long been a hero of mine. The greatness of her faith and the stature of her spiritual strength are, to me, on a par with the centurion who besought healing for his servant. Both exemplify implicit faith in and a knowledge of the divinity of the Son of God, and do so without the help of the covenants, teachings, and culture surrounding the house of Israel. To both individuals, the Savior not only mercifully granted the miracle for which they petitioned, but bestowed a commendation for their great faith (see Luke 7:0 and Matthew 15:28)... Read more »

Leave winter without leaving the house

By Nancy Young with photographs by Tanner Young and Elspeth Young

If you dream of some peak at the sun or ache for a long weekend of warmth, you know you live in northern climes and it's winter. But if a ticket to Crete, Corsica, or Cannes wasn't  one of your stocking stuffers on Christmas morning, spend a leisurely breakfast with a large bowl of sunshiny oranges, clementines, or mangoes, some rosewater-scented honey, and one of the slightly indulgent delicacies described here. Then dream away... Read more »
