And [Jesus] spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.  And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.

3 Nephi 17:23-24

The story behind Behold Your Little Ones

This painting depicts the divine calling of motherhood, wherein all children are begotten sons and daughters unto God, and it is the privilege and power of mothers to lift them toward the divine light that shines down upon them.

Symbolism in Behold Your Little Ones

Just as all the visual lines in the painting lead to the little girl's face, so motherhood is selflessly directed towards saving the family.  The light which radiates from the child and reflects in the mother's countenance symbolizes the Lord's watchcare in the work of mothers and fathers and reminds us of the Savior's injunction to behold your little ones.
