the martellus project a commission to make a globe and floor stand
Completed and shipped to the patron in the spring of 2004, the globe stand was designed by Al and built by Al and Ashton. Ashton and Elspeth designed the map. Ashton painted the stand and Elspeth painted the map and ornamental accents.
Turned legs, two hemispheres, a spindle, and casters were the only ready-made items purchased for this project.

Polar caps were hand carved and the underside of each was reshaped to conform to the curvature of the globe.
The spindle-axis for the globe was mounted to the stand through the spacer blocks and polar plates (affixed to the globe).
Once mounted in the stand, the globe surface was prepared.
A rough surface texture for the globe was desired.
With the under-painting of the ocean done, a grid was drawn on the globe to facilitate the cell-by-cell transfer and skewing of the map.
Land masses, the suggestion of terrain and flora, and the suggestion of ocean depths were added.
