And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever.

Ether 12:41

The story behind Seek This Jesus

This painting invites viewers to come to Christ—to "come and see...come and belong."   A depiction of a woman of race witnessing the sacred wounds in the Risen Lord's hands, it is a reminder of the Savior's mindfulness of us one by one, and the universal love inherent in His incomparable sacrifice.

Its setting and story are unbounded by time—as timeless as His Atoning sacrifice and its reach.  Though inspired by scriptural accounts in Third Nephi 11 and John's Revelation, it is not specific to any one time and place, but intended to be of universal application.

Symbolism in Seek This Jesus

The painting's composition and lighting celebrate the Savior as its central focal point, respectfully reminding viewers of His mission as the Light of the world: He is the brightest element in the painting, and His light is the source of light illuminating His surroundings.  The artist carefully painted His countenance, hands, and clothing as if lit both from without and within—an unearthly whiteness consistent with scriptural descriptions of resurrected persons.  The gold edging of the Savior's tunic is a nod to descriptions by John the Revelator and the prophet Daniel who each describe the Savior's resurrected clothing as containing gold.

The mountain setting and peaceful, rocky waterside were carefully selected as symbolic of the Savior Himself—the "rock of eternity"  and the "living water."   Equally symbolic are the wild mustard plants surrounding the figures, intended to remind the viewer of the Savior's parable of the mustard seed; as well as the white anemones reminiscent of the "lilies of the field" from Christ's Sermon on the Mount.   Each element, including all grasses and specimens included, were thoughtfully selected as ubiquitous and non-specific to any one region of the globe so that the painting's setting could feel familiar anywhere.
