USAT U.S. Grant entering Manila Bay (BenHaven archives reference no.: 4.14.0030) A note, written in Alfred R. Young's hand, in blue ink on the back of the photograph, says: "This is a picture of the Grant coming into the Manila Bay, with the ships flying above it."" The U.S. Army Air Corps airplanes to which Alfred refers, flying above the troop transport, can be seen in the upper left hand corner of the photograph. For troops arriving or departing on such troop carriers as the U.S. Grant, the U.S. Army Air Corps performed fly-bys as a salute to in-coming and out-going comrades.
