His beard is part of the base commander's effort to boost morale, by requiring everyone on base to grow a beard. Ted was stationed at Clark Field. Whether the photograph was taken at Clark Field is unknown.

William H. Bartsch provided a photographic copy of this image, originally made available by Miriam Pachacki, Ted Fisch's widow. The photograph appears in December 8, 1941: MacArthur's Pearl Harbor by William H. Bartsch. The copy and accompanying correspondence are part of the Alfred R. Young papers in The BenHaven Archives.
