Lithography, drawing and experimentation (overview)

When I began experimenting with lithography in 1996, I focused on tonal rendering instead of line drawing because tonal pencil drawings had occupied much of my attention as an artist up until that time.
The work of artists whose interests draw them toward line as a means of expression has always delighted me, but my own interests invariably drew me toward tone instead.  I came to realize that were I to pursue line, I would have to study idiom and technique before I could express the subject; indeed, before I could even discover my own artistic identity in terms of line and then complete the long and arduous journey toward mastery... Limited Edition Prints: All 14 editions by the Artists of Al Young Studios

By Al R. Young The Limited Edition Collection consists of 66 artworks hand drawn as lithographic images by Al R. Young and Ashton Young, respectively.  These finely crafted miniatures were then printed in collaboration with artist and master printer Wayne Kimball.

The process by which these artworks were produced, including the documentation of their creation, make them collectible in the finest tradition of original, signed, numbered, and limited-edition fine art prints.

AP    Abbreviation for artist proof.
Arabic    The number in the Arabic column indicates the quantity of prints comprising the numbered part of the edition.  For example, 50 indicates that the Arabic numbered edition includes fifty prints, numbered 1/50 through 50/50.

Limited Edition Prints: Lithographic fine art printing process

The following photographs summarize the lithographic printing process by which Al R. Young and W. Wayne Kimball collaborated to produce 55 of the limited edition prints available from Al Young Studios.  Wayne also collaborated with Ashton Young to produce a limited-edition of prints in 1999.
Limestone slabs, quarried in Bavaria, serve as the printing element, placed in the press bed, from which the prints were made.  Each stone weighs approximately 100 lb., is 3 in. thick, and has a drawing surface measuring 16 in... Read more »

Wayne Kimball, artist and master printer

W. Wayne Kimball is a Tamarind Master Printer (Tamarind Institute, University of New Mexico, 1971).  He received a Master of Fine Arts (University of Arizona, 1970), and a Bachelor of Arts (College of Southern Utah, 1968).
He is a retired professor of drawing, lithography, and other subjects in the Department of Visual Arts, Brigham Young University.  He has held professorships and lectureships at Arizona State University, California State University Long Beach, San Diego State University, University of New Mexico, University of Texas at San Antonio, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison... The drawing table

In January 1981, I built a drawing table to have a custom workspace dedicated to pencil drawing.  The table-top, made from a piece of quarter-inch hardboard laminated to a three-quarter-inch piece of pressboard, had once served as a restaurant table.  We had rescued it from a derelict garage a couple of years before, and the 2x4 legs, platform, and under-carriage that I made for it came from the salvage of a stud wall recently removed to extend the second-story studio floor all the way to the eave of an attic roof...
