And Boaz answered and said unto [Ruth], It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.

Ruth 2:12

The story behind Under Whose Wings Thou Art Come To Trust

Ruth came up out of the land of Moab in the company of Naomi.  And Naomi's husband had a kinsman named Boaz, "a mighty man of wealth," and Ruth appealed unto Naomi to glean in his fields, after the reapers had harvested.  And while Ruth did so, Boaz came up from Bethlehem and, seeing Ruth, inquired of his servants who she was.  The passage of scripture accompanying the painting are the words of Boaz upon meeting Ruth.

Symbolism in Under Whose Wings Thou Art Come To Trust

Ruth is a timeless example of faith and obedience, depicted, here, gleaning at the edges of fields of grain.  Nevertheless, the painting is not intended as a literal illustration of the back-breaking drudgery of gleaning, but as an image of the radiant hope in the promises and protection of the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations (Deuteronomy 7:9)--the God of Israel in whom Ruth has unwaveringly come to trust.

The traditional head wrap, tunic, gleaning belt, and braided hairstyle are typical of ancient Palestinian cultures.
