And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed...

Genesis 30:13

The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel...

Ruth 4:11

The story behind Blessed

This simple portrait gives a favorable portrayal of Jacob's wife, Leah.  Though unfortunate contentions between her and her sister are generally associated with this mother-figure in the Old Testament, the book of Ruth gives us a little glimpse into her true character and the work which she, together with Jacob and Rachel, performed—in Ruth 4:11, she and Rachel are extolled as the builders of the house of Israel.  Surely this speaks of her ultimate goodness, despite any weaknesses and difficulties with which she may have wrestled.  Her words in Genesis 30:13 also show us that she understood that the "daughters will call me blessed" because she was a mother in Israel.  This image depicts a mother who is "blessed" with the understanding of her sacred role as a mother in Heavenly Father's plan.
