The story behind Into The West

The Lord of the Rings is the literary world from which the feeling of this oil painting derives. Into The West refers to the departure of the elven ships from the Grey Havens of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

Curatorial Details

The panel is three-quarter-inch plywood.

Several gesso layers were applied directly to the panel.  The gesso was manufactured by DEMCO, 5485 Ramsay, St-Hubert, Quebec, Canada J3Y 2S3.

Oil paints used in the creation of this painting include Rembrandt colors manufactured by Royal Talens, P.O. Box 4, Apeldoorn, Holland.  Other oil colors used in the fabrication of the painting were manufactured by M. Graham & Co., West Linn, Oregon 97068 USA.

Walnut Alkyd Medium was used in the painting.  The medium was also manufactured by M. Graham & Co.  The final glaze is Cold Wax Medium manufactured by Gamblin Artists Colors Co., P.O. Box 625, Portland, Oregon 97207 USA.

Frame designed and fabricated during the first half of 2005 by Ashton Young.

The frame is composed of a pine base, approximately 3/4 inches thick. Above the pine base is a poplar liner, approximately 9/16 inches thick.  Above the liner is a polystyrene molding.  The molding wrapping the circumference of the frame is poplar.  Wire brads, zinc screws, polyurethane adhesives, a water-based wood adhesive, and other fasteners join the materials.  Corner ornaments, where applied, are a rosin compound from The Decorator’s Supply Corporation, 3610-12 So. Morgan Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60609 USA.

Finishing of the ten frames in the series, created during the first half of 2005, typically included a coat of plaster, an acrylic primer, composite metal leaf, polyurethane satin sealer, acrylic washes, and a coat of buffed wax.
