And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

Now Moses in the a law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

John 8:2-11

The story behind The Miracle Of Forgiveness

John 8:2-11 tells of the woman taken in adultery, and that when her accusers departed she was left standing in the midst. This painting of the woman is not the moment of accusation or judgment, but the moment of forgiveness. It is the moment of gratitude as light and life flow down from Heaven like a waterfall of renewal, when the first rays of returning hope bathe the blessed soul of one forgiven. This is the moment when the work and glory of God blossom to fruition as the miracle of His forgiveness binds up the wounded heart. That is why there are two light sources: The Savior's countenance shining on her from the right, and the light of Heaven from above answering the Savior's word.

Symbolism in The Miracle Of Forgiveness

Like the marred stone in this painting, sin disfigures the temple of our beings and our dreams. It fills us with shame before the piercing gaze of God. It casts us into depths of isolation where the enemy of our soul hunts us in the dark. And, instead of being arrayed in purity consistent with that holy image and likeness in which God made us, this woman appears in the blood-red color of her sin. Hanging by a thread about her neck a swallow falls beneath the sun; a solitary swallow (also symbolic of liberty) who by nature mates for life.  This is a painting of the condescension of God, whose work and glory is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (Moses 1:39).  So it is that He descends below all things to find and heal each marred and fallen soul.
