Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

Acts 26:28-31

The story behind What Is Truth

Bernice, of Herodian nobility, appears in Acts 25:13 - 26:32.  In those passages, she does not utter the haunting words of Agrippa, but is both witness to them and complicit in them.  Such details as are known about her life come from sources other than scripture, but from those sources it is evident that nothing in the world is as precious as truth and the courage to live and die for it.

Symbolism in What Is Truth

Bernice is presented in the attitude of prayer, as one searching her soul alone in the darkness yet illumined by that Light which searches for each of us.  It is a moment of decision to which everyone comes time and time again--the moment of choosing whether, as Paul describes it, we shall be almost or altogether.
